Shaun White knows that a winning romance takes work.
Two weeks after the Olympic gold medalist got engaged to longtime love Nina Dobrev, he reflected on what works for their relationship.
"I'm beside myself to be with this amazing woman and to be joining her beautiful family," Shaun began on Instagram Nov. 14. "Our quarantine romance turned into this beautiful relationship and now a forever love. Believe me when I say that this app mostly shows us at our best."
"Behind the curtain, like any relationship, we've had our struggles," he continued. "But it's our ability to communicate and repair that keeps us moving forward together. I'm so thankful for the life lessons, gratitude, adventure and love that Nina has taught me, and I only wish to show her the same in return."
The snowboarder shared the heartwarming message alongside a clip of his romantic proposal to the Vampire Diaries alum at The Golden Swan restaurant in New York City filled with white flowers and glowing candles. And he was sure to highlight their loved ones coming back to the room to congratulate the newly engaged couple and gush over Nina's dazzling ring.
The 38-year-old shared the news on Instagram alongside photos of himself and his love, writing, "She said yes." For her part, Nina wrote in her post, "RIP Boyfriend, hello fiancé."
The couple shared insight into Shaun's preparation, including sending Nina a fake invitation for an intimate dinner with Vogue's Anna Wintour.
"He made the invite look so legitimate," Nina, 35, told Vogue last month. "I was in a panic that Anna's waiting for me."
Instead, she opened the door to see the athlete standing under an arch of beautiful flowers. "I went into shock," she recalled. "I just froze and stared at him."
But everything went according to plan. As the Degrassi alum put it, "He said all the right things."
And it seems Shaun popped the question at the perfect time. After all, he previously shared that their engagement will come when the time is right.
"Time will tell," he teased to E! News in 2022. "Things are great with Nina and I, and I am so excited to focus on our relationship and my relationship with other friends and family."
And the couple have been sure to spend ample time "checking off" some of Shaun's post-retirement goals. And that included a trip to France to visit Nina's mom.
"It was just the best," he recalled. "These are those moments. You can have the glitz and glam of it all, but real family quality time with people is what I want for the most—and now I am doing that."
Now, keep reading for a full breakdown of Shaun and Nina's golden romance.
